Data Not Found

Kaki King

In a rare opportunity, Potion had the chance to partner with world-class guitarist and composer Kaki King in developing technology for her new live show Data Not Found.

Kaki King’s DATA NOT FOUND is a gripping meditation on the data we live with, and what we leave behind. In this show, composer Kaki King reinvents her guitar to become a shaper of both sonic and visual experience, inviting audiences to contemplate how humans create meaning out the vast endless patterns of our world.

Highlights

  • 3D realtime projection mapping system for live performance

Inspired by elements of nature, DATA NOT FOUND incorporates lush, often responsive technical theater and projection work, filling a stage that acts as a canvas. With virtuosic musicianship, advanced performative technologies, and sparse storytelling, the end result is a feeling of audiovisual immersion. DATA NOT FOUND is an opus, an elegy, and a tribute: to the traces of things that are lost, and found.

Working with Kaki, our goal was to build a system where Kaki could develop some of the techniques she first utilized in her multimedia work The Neck is a Bridge to the Body, where she used innovative projection mapping on her guitar.  However, the previous system required the guitar to be mounted to a fixed rig.  We needed to figure out a way for her to be unbound, and free to move about. We developed a system that allowed this using 3D simulations for VR as the basis for realtime 3D tracking.  The show has since moved from Mass MoCA to Lincoln Center, to Abu Dhabi receiving rave reviews all over.

“This was intense, intelligent, and emotional art. It wasn’t in-your-face explicit, but it was thought-provoking … There were mellow acoustic numbers and then lushly layered, driving rides; the set was truly diverse.”
